Coliving is a modern form of shared housing and living. Also known as communal living, or shared living, coliving allows housemates to build communities and new friendships while still having their own private space with their bedroom. It’s a way to live and share a home with other like-minded people.
Many of our housemates decide to start coliving as it is usually cheaper than renting your own place. For example, if you were living in a one bedroom flat you’d still need a bathroom, kitchen and living room and be paying all your own bills – water, gas, electric, TV license, WiFi, council tax… you get the idea! Effectively by sharing you split the cost of these extra rooms and the bills they come with, as with RHouse we take care of all of that.
So by coliving it's often possible to live in a better property or in a better area than you could afford otherwise.
However in addition to the cost factor sharing can also be a great way to live, and this is the community element we at RHouse are very proud of. The social benefits of sharing can be a real advantage. In a recent survey of Spareroom users 58% said that, while the financial benefit is the most important factor, they choose to live in a houseshare for both financial and social reasons.
Going back to our one bedroom flat example, if you’re working from home all day (especially during Covid times) there is a very high chance you could go a few days without seeing another person or even leaving the house! Whereas those who are coliving finish work for the day and can come to their shared living spaces and cook a meal with their housemates, enjoy a film or even just hit the gym together to let off some steam.
It doesn’t always have to be big things together (though we do love our joint house events!), but just going about day to day life with some company. CoLIVING. We’ve all found ourselves in a funk over the last two years and sometimes all it takes is someone asking if we want to go on a walk together to snap us out of a spiral, which when we’ve lived in such an isolated world for so long is very much needed.
