We all come from different worlds and then have to negotiate living with strangers to start with, these strangers will often become lifelong friends as we have found with a lot of our housemates.
What are their secrets? Here are a few pointers to help you live with people well:
Communicate
Communication is key to our housemates getting along and making sure that everyone is having the best time. Regular house meetings help to keep the communication lines open.
Respect & personal belongings
Respecting your housemates space and belongings is a must, make sure to clean up after yourself in the communal areas and don’t leave it for your housemates to clean. If you break something, fix it or replace it. If you want to borrow something that belongs to another housemate, ask permission first.
Food & drink
Make sure to only eat and drink what is yours. If you have a communal kitty for certain items for the house to share, discuss with your housemates what everyone would like to buy. Eating meals together is a great way to get to know your housemates, how about having a weekly or monthly housemate meal?
The daily chores
At RHouse our wonderful cleaners will come to clean the communal areas and shared bathrooms once a week. Outside of this visit it’s great that our housemates treat the house like a home and we encourage them to share the cleaning and washing up duties (or dishwasher stacking duties).
Build house traditions
Make sure to have fun living in your home, a lot of our houses have nights out together, plan a Halloween costume party each year, or go to festivals together. There are so many traditions you can build with your new friends.
