Reading in the Summer

It’s fair to say that the last two summers have been a little different to what we’re used to!But what the last two years have seen is an influx of people moving out of big cities to more places like Reading to achieve a more balanced lifestyle. We’ve definitely seen an increase in potential housemates who are new to the area, and we’ve loved helping them get to know the area.

With that in mind, and the weather (supposedly!) improving we thought it might be nice to do a little round up of what Reading in the summer has in store now we’re in for our first “normal” summer in a while…

Reading Festival

We can’t not start with it! The Reading and Leeds Festivals are a pair of annual music festivals that take place in Reading and Leeds in England taking place simultaneously on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the August bank holiday weekend. It is a loud weekend, with houses saying they often hear the headline acts from miles away!

The festival brings a great buzz to the town, and for our housemates it’s often a no brainer to attend – some of the world’s best music acts on your doorstep, and not needing to pay for overnight camping? Sold!

This year sees the likes of Dave, Arctic Monkeys and Rage Against The Machine headlining, as well as an increased Go Green awareness with a heavy emphasis on sustainability and reduced waste.

Summer Screens

A warm summer night watching a movie outside with your housemates, popcorn in one hand and a beer in the other – doesn’t that just sound like perfection?

Reading has two venues for Summer Screens, a company that has been leading the way in open air cinema since 2011, and we know it’s something loads of our housemates have taken advantage of in the past. Both Caversham Court and Reading Ruins are great locations for these events, and easy to get to from all of our houses. Having been to a few ourselves we’d really recommend taking advantage of the beanbags or deckchair seats and definitely take a few blankets with you just in case!

Parks and outdoor space

If there’s one thing the pandemic has taught us it’s to be grateful for the outdoors, never underestimate the effect a nice walk and picnic can have. In Reading we’re lucky to have so many big open space for you and your housemates to take advantage of – the likes of Dinton Pastures and Prospect Park being great for picnics. For those feeling a bit more fancy there’s a day out at Basildon Park to consider. And for those really wanting to push the boat out there’s Beale Wildlife Park – a park dedicated to the care and conservation of rare and endangered mammals and birds.

Liquid Leisure Windsor

Are you a fan of Total Wipeout and Ninja Warrior UK? Chances are you’d be up for a day at Liquid Leisure in Windsor then! Windsor is only a half hour drive or train journey from Reading, and in the past this has been a great activity for our housemates. With options including wakeboarding on the water sports lake, clambering across the floating obstacle courses, enjoying the boat activities or simply just relaxing on the beach resort section there really is something for every housemate here.

And sidenote, if you happened to get any photos of you and your housemates tackling the obstacle course, we’d be more than happy to see/laugh at them!

And what if it rains?

The great British summertime can’t always be relied upon for it’s good weather, but Reading town have been working on that too! With the addition of Spinners Crazy Golf And Bowling (and darts, cocktails and pizza!) and RDG Biscuit Factory cinema there’s now more to do in Reading than ever before.

It’s an exciting time to be living in Reading, and we can’t wait to introduce more housemates to it.
